I've wanted to follow in the footsteps of my sister for as long as I can remember. After she was recruited to San Diego State to row for them from 2020-2024, I knew that, after seeing how excited she was about the whole process, I would simply need to do the same. After I began rowing, I absolutely fell in love with the sport, pushing myself more and more everyday to do better. With my overall goal being that I get recruited, I have been more than happy showing up every day to practice to better myself for me, my team, and my future team.
During my novice year, I was nominated by several other teammates to be team captain. After a round of voting, I was co-captains with one of my good friends, and we led our teams to win much hardware in the short amount of time we were able to race. Adding onto my leadership skills with my teammates, I also am naturally a leader when it comes to class work and school activities. I used to participate in musical theatre as well as be a counselor for musical theatre camps, and I found that you really need to lead by example for everyone to get things done on time. I would show up to rehearsals or to work, ready to listen and ready to help others.
I believe that sometimes, it can truly be a struggle to stay healthy as a student athlete. Before I joined rowing, I struggled with keeping a good balance of eating healthy as well as keeping up with exercising a lot and so on. For the last 2.5 years, I have been working on bettering my health habits; eating healthy, going to sleep early, not procrastinating, and going to practice six days a week helps keep me on track, and I am only learning more as I keep pursuing my rowing career.
In my community, I have found myself really trying to help people better themselves in what they love. Like I mentioned earlier, before the pandemic I was a counselor for children's musical theatre. Doing this allowed me to help others in a way I could clearly see, but more recently I have found myself participating in a club called From Survivors For Survivors at my school. This club allows me to help people who have gone through versions of sexual assault, and bring more awareness to my community. I am proud to say I am a part of this club, as we are trying to educate people not only at our school, but even more throughout our area.
