COLLEGE SOFTBALL RECRUITING

SOFTBALL SCHOLARSHIPS

How to get recruited and play college Softball.

College softball is a women's only sport and is one of the most popular sports played at the college level. Intercollegiate softball is played at a whopping 1,679 colleges across the USA.

College softball recruiting is very competitive. There are over 370,000 high school softball players and only 31,000 college players. Just over 8% of high school players go on to play college softball.

NCAA

There are just under 1000 universities affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association that have college softball programs. In Division I, 295 schools/colleges can offer up to 12 softball scholarships per team. There are 284 Division II schools that are allowed to offer 7.2 scholarships. 416 Division III colleges also play intercollegiate softball but no athletic scholarships are awarded at DIII level. Other forms of financial aid may be available at D3 colleges.

NCAA College Softball is an equivalency sport which means that each full softball scholarship can be broken up into partial scholarships. The average team size is 20 athletes, with only 12 or 7 scholarships for each coach to divide among their team. As a result of this, most coaches opt to offering many partial scholarships rather than awarding full scholarships to their team.

NAIA

There are 193 college softball programs at NAIA colleges. Softball is an equivalency sport with 10 softball scholarships per college team.

NJCAA

Over 350 junior colleges offer softball as an intercollegiate sport. As in the NCAA and NAIA it is classed as an equivalency sport with 20 softball scholarships on offer per school.

SOFTBALL RECRUITING TIPS

  1. Get your name out there to college softball coaches. The best way to contact college coaches is by creating a free recruiting profile. You must market yourself through a profile and video to maximize your recruiting opportunities.
  2. Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. Once you start communicating with college coaches they will see your eligibility status. You must be registered and eligible to play softball at the NCAA level.
  3. Many colleges run softball camps. Make a short-list of softball schools that you would like to play for and see if you can attend their camps. Coaches, recruiters and scouts attend these camps and it’s a great way to get on a coaches recruiting radar.
  4. Travel Teams are a great way to gain exposure and experience. The best softball travel teams usually consist of the best high school players in each state. A college coach is more likely to attend a travel team’s game than a high school game.
  5. Check out the softball information and resources that are available at USA Softball.
